People type this into search as how much water should I drink.
The water intake calculator uses the National Academies adult Adequate Intake for total water. Total water means drinking water, other drinks, and the water already in food. The number is an AI, a typical adequate amount. Thirst, urine color, heat, and a clinician still come first.
The two published totals
The National Academies water chapter sets the adult AI at 3.7 L a day for men and 2.7 L a day for women. In the survey behind that AI, drinks supplied about 3.0 L for men and 2.2 L for women. The calculator’s assumptions call that roughly 81 percent of total water.
male total = 3.7 L
female total = 2.7 L
drinks in the survey = 3.0 L for men, 2.2 L for women
result = total + any extra liters you type
The sex field stores 1 for the male AI and 0 for the female AI. The card prints that 1 or 0. Any extra fluid is liters you type yourself. The report says heat and hard work raise the need. It does not hand the calculator a multiplier, so the extra stays at 0 until you enter one.
On a US visit the card converts liters to gallons with the site factor 0.264172052, then rounds to two decimals. Trailing zeros drop, so 0.40 gal prints as 0.4 gal. The formula still runs in liters. A separate site factor, 0.033814023 fl oz per mL, turns the same liters into fluid ounces when you want that unit. One liter is 1,000 times that factor, 33.814023 fl oz.
Fig 1
One AI, then any extra you type
Food moisture is already inside the 3.7 L and the 2.7 L
The male AI is 3.7 L. The female AI is 2.7 L. Extra liters are added on top. The survey drink shares are 3.0 L and 2.2 L.
3.0 ÷ 3.7 = 0.811, which is 81.1 percent. 2.2 ÷ 2.7 = 0.815, which is 81.5 percent. Both sit on the “roughly 81 percent” line in the assumptions. The food share is the rest: 0.7 L for men and 0.5 L for women.
Energy is a different calculator. The calorie post and the protein post start from body size. A shower or a water bill is household use, not this AI. Those sit on the shower cost post and the household water calculator.
Example 1: the male AI, no extra
- sex: 1, the adult male AI
- extra fluid: 0 L
Total: 3.7 L
Drinks in the survey: 3.0 L
Food moisture: 3.7 − 3.0 = 0.7 L
Gallons, before rounding: 3.7 × 0.264172052 = 0.9774, displayed as 0.98 gal
Drinks: 3.0 × 0.264172052 = 0.7925, displayed as 0.79 gal
Fluid ounces, from 33.814023 fl oz per liter: 3.7 × 33.814023 = 125.11 fl oz. The drink share is 3.0 × 33.814023 = 101.44 fl oz.
125.11 ÷ 8 = 15.64 glasses of 8 fl oz, if you want the total in that size. 101.44 ÷ 8 = 12.68 glasses for the drink share. The AI’s own unit is the liter. The glasses are that liter total divided by 8.

The displayed gallons do not subtract cleanly. 0.98 − 0.79 = 0.19 gal. The food share is 0.7 L, and 0.7 × 0.264172052 = 0.1849 gal, which would round to 0.18 gal on its own. The 0.01 gal gap is the two rounded lines. Use the liters when you want the food share to add back to the total.

Drinks are 3.0 L, which is 81.1 percent.
Food moisture is 0.7 L, which is 18.9 percent.
Example 2: the female AI, no extra
- sex: 0
- extra fluid: 0 L
Total: 2.7 L
Drinks: 2.2 L
Food moisture: 2.7 − 2.2 = 0.5 L
Gallons: 2.7 × 0.264172052 = 0.7133, displayed as 0.71 gal
Drinks: 2.2 × 0.264172052 = 0.5812, displayed as 0.58 gal
Fluid ounces: 2.7 × 33.814023 = 91.30 fl oz. Drinks: 2.2 × 33.814023 = 74.39 fl oz.
In 8 fl oz glasses that is 91.30 ÷ 8 = 11.41 glasses for the total, and 74.39 ÷ 8 = 9.30 glasses for the drinks.
0.71 − 0.58 = 0.13 gal. The food share is 0.5 × 0.264172052 = 0.1321 gal, which rounds to 0.13 gal. On this row the rounded gallons do add back. On the male row they were 0.01 gal apart. Same converter, different rounding luck.

The gap between the two AIs is 3.7 − 2.7 = 1.0 L. On the card that is 0.98 − 0.71 = 0.27 gal. The unrounded gap is 1 × 0.264172052 = 0.2642 gal. The extra 0.01 gal on the card is rounding on both ends.

Example 3: add half a liter
The calculator’s own check uses the female AI plus 0.5 L.
Total in liters: 2.7 + 0.5 = 3.2 L
Gallons: 3.2 × 0.264172052 = 0.8454, displayed as 0.85 gal
The detail lines keep the original AI at 0.71 gal, the drink share at 0.58 gal, the extra at 0.5 × 0.264172052 = 0.1321, displayed as 0.13 gal, and the sum at 0.85 gal.
0.71 + 0.13 = 0.84, and the sum line says 0.85. The liters add exactly. The gallons are each rounded, so the printed parts can miss the printed sum by 0.01 gal. Read the sum line as the rounded total, and the liters as the arithmetic.

Half a liter is 0.5 × 33.814023 = 16.91 fl oz, a bit over two 8 fl oz glasses (16 fl oz). The female total moves from 11.41 glasses to 3.2 × 33.814023 ÷ 8 = 108.20 ÷ 8 = 13.53 glasses.
Example 4: one extra liter, and the totals meet
Add 1 L on each AI.
Male: 3.7 + 1 = 4.7 L. 4.7 × 0.264172052 = 1.2416, displayed as 1.24 gal. The extra alone is 0.26 gal.
Female: 2.7 + 1 = 3.7 L. That is the male AI with no extra. The card prints 0.98 gal, the same headline as Example 1.
The drink shares do not move. Extra fluid is added to the total. It is not added to the 3.0 L or the 2.2 L survey lines. Those lines stay as the survey’s split of the original AI.
A woman who adds 1 L and a man who adds 0 L land on the same 3.7 L. The cards match. The sex field still says which AI you started from.
Example 5: what if the extra runs from 0 to 2 liters
The AI stays put. Only the sum changes. Each half liter adds 0.5 L, which is 0.1321 gal before rounding.
| Extra | Male liters | Male card | Female liters | Female card |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 L | 3.7 L | 0.98 gal | 2.7 L | 0.71 gal |
| 0.25 L | 3.95 L | 1.04 gal | 2.95 L | 0.78 gal |
| 0.5 L | 4.2 L | 1.11 gal | 3.2 L | 0.85 gal |
| 1 L | 4.7 L | 1.24 gal | 3.7 L | 0.98 gal |
| 1.5 L | 5.2 L | 1.37 gal | 4.2 L | 1.11 gal |
| 2 L | 5.7 L | 1.51 gal | 4.7 L | 1.24 gal |
A few rounding notes, so the column is easy to check.
0.25 × 0.264172052 = 0.0660, displayed as 0.07 gal. Male sum: 3.95 × 0.264172052 = 1.0435, displayed as 1.04 gal. Female sum: 2.95 × 0.264172052 = 0.7793, displayed as 0.78 gal.
1.5 × 0.264172052 = 0.3963, displayed as 0.4 gal, because 0.40 loses the trailing zero. Male sum: 5.2 × 0.264172052 = 1.3737, displayed as 1.37 gal.
2 × 0.264172052 = 0.5283, displayed as 0.53 gal. Male sum 1.51 gal. Female sum 4.7 L, the same 1.24 gal as the male row with 1 L extra.
The female column is the male column shifted by 1 L. Female plus 1 L matches male plus 0. Female plus 1.5 L matches male plus 0.5 L. Female plus 2 L matches male plus 1 L. The shift is the 1.0 L gap between 3.7 and 2.7.

| +0.5 L | 4.2 | 3.2 |
| +1 L | 4.7 | 3.7 |

Male totals are 3.7, 4.2, 4.7, and 5.7 L.
Female totals are 2.7, 3.2, 3.7, and 4.7 L.
Example 6: the food share, in liters and in gallons
The survey split is part of the published AI, not a second target you have to drink.
| Total | Drinks | Food | Drinks ÷ total | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Male | 3.7 L | 3.0 L | 0.7 L | 81.1% |
| Female | 2.7 L | 2.2 L | 0.5 L | 81.5% |
Card, extra at 0:
| Total | Drinks | Printed gap | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Male | 0.98 gal | 0.79 gal | 0.19 gal |
| Female | 0.71 gal | 0.58 gal | 0.13 gal |
Male food in gallons, unrounded, is 0.1849. Female food is 0.1321, which matches the printed 0.13 gal gap. If you subtract the two male gallon lines and call the result the food, you are 0.01 gal high of the converted 0.7 L.
The drinks are about four fifths of the AI on both rows. A day of coffee, tea, milk, and water counts toward the drink share. The calculator does not split those drinks any further.
Example 7: reading the gallon as if it were liters
Example 1 prints 0.98 gal. That number is a converted 3.7 L. It is not 0.98 L.
0.98 ÷ 0.264172052 = 3.71 L, close to 3.7 L because 0.98 is the rounded gallon. If you drank 0.98 L and stopped, you would be at 0.98 ÷ 3.7 = 26 percent of the male AI.
The same slip on the female card: 0.71 gal is 2.7 L, not 0.71 L. 0.71 ÷ 0.264172052 = 2.69 L.
Another slip is to stop at the drink line and treat 0.79 gal, or 3.0 L, as the whole AI. The headline is the total. The drink line is the survey’s share of that total. The food share is already counted in the 3.7 L and the 2.7 L. You do not add the food on top of the headline, and you do not have to drink the headline as plain water.
A third slip is to add a heat multiplier the report does not give you. Type the extra liters you actually plan to drink. Example 5 is that addition. A blank extra leaves the published AI alone.
Example 8: 64 fl oz next to the two AIs
A half gallon is 64 fl oz, because a US gallon is 128 fl oz. 64 ÷ 128 = 0.5 gal.
Set that next to the cards with extra at 0.
| Line | Card | Compared with 0.5 gal |
|---|---|---|
| Male total | 0.98 gal | 0.48 gal higher |
| Male drinks | 0.79 gal | 0.29 gal higher |
| Female total | 0.71 gal | 0.21 gal higher |
| Female drinks | 0.58 gal | 0.08 gal higher |
0.5 gal is under every one of those lines. In liters, 0.5 ÷ 0.264172052 = 1.89 L. The female drink share is 2.2 L. The male drink share is 3.0 L. 1.89 L is 0.31 L under the female drinks and 1.11 L under the male drinks.
64 ÷ 8 = 8 glasses of 8 fl oz. Example 1’s male total was 15.64 of those glasses. Example 2’s female total was 11.41. Eight of them is the half-gallon row, not the AI.
The calculator will not turn 64 fl oz into a result by itself. Convert to liters first if you want it in the extra field. 1.89 L of extra on top of an AI is a different question from 1.89 L as your whole day. Extra is added. It does not replace the 3.7 L or the 2.7 L.

Open the water calculator and pick the AI, then add liters only when you have a real extra for heat or work. The result includes food. An AI is a published adequate amount, and a clinician’s advice still outranks one number on a hot day or in illness.
