How much does parking cost per year?

Daily parking times days times weeks, compared with twelve monthly passes. Here is the $3,456 daily year, the $3,120 pass, and the 3-day week where paying daily wins.

People type this into search every day: parking cost calculator.

The usual answer is the $18 sign on the garage. That is a day. The year is that sign times the days you park, set next to a monthly pass that bills even in August.

The parking cost calculator does both. Daily rate times days per week times weeks per year. Twelve monthly passes on the other side. The cheaper annual option is the smaller pile.

This page is a labeled garage math. It is not your city’s tariff, and it is not a validation sticker.

Daily pile versus twelve passes

The calculator uses:

daily rate × parking days × weeks

and

monthly pass × 12

The pass is paid for all twelve months. Event and overnight surcharges stay out. Those are the tool’s assumptions.

Fig 1

Two ways to pay for the same stall

Daily multiplies by the days you show up. The pass multiplies by twelve.

Daily priceTimes days and weeksMonthly passTimes twelveKeep the smaller year

Four days at $18 for 48 weeks is $3,456. Twelve $260 passes are $3,120. The card keeps $3,120.

The commute cost post already puts parking next to kilometres. Its default day is $12 of fees on a 42 km round trip. This page is the stall by itself.

IRS Publication 463 lists parking as a travel cost when the trip qualifies. Regular home-to-office commuting generally does not. The year you type here is cash leaving the account, not a deduction method.

Example 1: the published $3,120 pass year

Here are the calculator defaults:

  • daily parking price: $18
  • parking days per week: 4
  • weeks per year: 48
  • monthly pass alternative: $260

Daily year: 18 × 4 × 48 = $3,456.00

Pass year: 260 × 12 = $3,120.00

Annual saving: $336.00

Cheaper option: $3,120.00

The note on the card: the monthly pass is cheaper.

Paying daily is $3,456.

Twelve $260 passes are $3,120, $336 less.

$18 × 4 is $72 a week. Forty-eight of those weeks are $3,456. The pass is $20.67 a week if you spread $3,120 across 48 weeks, or $260 every calendar month including the four you might skip.

Example 2: five days, and the 3-day hybrid week

Hold $18, 48 weeks, and the $260 pass. Change only the days.

  • 2 days: daily year $1,728.00. Pass $3,120.00. Daily is cheaper by $1,392.00.
  • 3 days: daily year $2,592.00. Pass $3,120.00. Daily is cheaper by $528.00.
  • 4 days (default): daily $3,456.00. Pass wins by $336.00.
  • 5 days: daily year $4,320.00. Pass wins by $1,200.00.

Break-even days on these prices:

18 × days × 48 = 3,120

days = 3.61

Past about 3.6 days a week, the pass is cheaper. Three days still lose $528 if you buy the pass and then work from home twice a week.

Four days cross it. Five days are $4,320.

The transit pass post is the same shape with fares. Its default break-even is 34 rides. Parking’s break-even is 3.61 days a week on this garage.

Example 3: what if I change only the daily price

Hold 4 days, 48 weeks, and $260.

  • $8 / day: daily year $1,536.00. Daily wins by $1,584.00.
  • $12 / day: daily year $2,304.00. Daily wins by $816.00.
  • $18 / day (default): daily $3,456.00. Pass wins by $336.00.
  • $25 / day: daily year $4,800.00. Pass wins by $1,680.00.

$12 is the commute calculator’s default parking-and-tolls line. On 4 × 48 days that line is $2,304 by itself. Add the 42 km at $0.32 / km and the commute year becomes $4,884.48. Swap that $12 for this $18 stall and the commute tool prints $6,036.48 a year, $503.04 a month.

The $18 stall is 57.3% of the day.

Without parking, that commute year is $2,580.48. The stall is the rest.

Example 4: a cheaper pass, and a $320 pass that loses

Hold $18, 4 days, 48 weeks.

Pass $180: pass year $2,160.00. Daily stays $3,456.00. Pass wins by $1,296.00.

Pass $260 (default): pass year $3,120.00. Pass wins by $336.00.

Pass $320: pass year $3,840.00. Daily $3,456.00 wins by $384.00.

The $320 pass is a worse deal than feeding the machine. People buy it because the monthly number looks smaller than $18 × 4 × 4.3. $320 versus a fuzzy “$72 a week” hides the four unpaid weeks.

Example 5: 50 weeks, and a 46-week year

Hold $18, 4 days, $260.

50 weeks: daily year $3,600.00. Pass $3,120.00. Pass wins by $480.00.

48 weeks (default): daily $3,456.00. Pass wins by $336.00.

46 weeks: daily year $3,312.00. Pass still wins, by $192.00.

The pass does not shrink when you take two extra weeks off. You already paid January through December. The daily pile shrinks with the calendar. That is why 46 weeks still lose only $192, and why 50 weeks lose $480.

Example 6: the 2-day street and the 5-day garage

Street, labeled: $6 a day, 5 days, 48 weeks, $200 pass.

Daily year: 6 × 5 × 48 = $1,440.00

Pass year: 200 × 12 = $2,400.00

Daily wins by $960.00.

Downtown garage, labeled: $28 a day, 5 days, 48 weeks, $350 pass.

Daily year: 28 × 5 × 48 = $6,720.00

Pass year: 350 × 12 = $4,200.00

Pass wins by $2,520.00.

The true cost of owning a car default year on the total cost of car ownership calculator is $12,500.00. That pile already includes $2,200 of maintenance, tax, and parking. A $4,200 garage pass is larger than that whole $2,200 line. Type the pass you actually pay if you want the ownership year to stay honest.

CFPB’s auto-loan shopping page is about the payment. Parking is the bill after you park the financed car.

Example 7: event parking, 26 weekends

Labeled event stall: $35 a day, 2 days a week, 26 weeks, same $260 pass.

Daily year: 35 × 2 × 26 = $1,820.00

Pass year: $3,120.00

Daily wins by $1,300.00.

A monthly pass for a Saturday sport is a gift to the garage. The tool still bills the pass for twelve months. Event surcharges on top of $35 stay out, so $1,820 is a floor.

Example 8: the 4-week month mistake

People multiply $18 × 4 days × 4 weeks and call it a month: $288.00.

Twelve of those invented months: $3,456.00, which happens to match the 48-week daily year.

Then they compare $288 with a $260 pass and buy the pass. That comparison is one month against one month. It hides the four weeks you do not commute. The calculator’s 48-week year is the honest daily pile. The pass is still $3,120 because it does not take August off.

$260 × 12 versus $18 × 4 × 52 would be $3,120 versus $3,744.00. The tool does not use 52 unless you type 52. Defaults use 48 working weeks, the same count as the commute calculator.
