What does food waste cost each year?

Food-waste cost is weekly spending times the waste share times 52, plus a year of disposal fees. Here is the $1,219.20 default, the $561.60 save if waste halves, and the $96 disposal line people skip.

People type this into search every day: food waste cost calculator.

The usual answer is a national average. USDA ERS published one for 2010. Your year is weekly grocery spending, the share that leaves the house uneaten, and the disposal fee on the utility bill.

This page is a labeled example. It is not a household audit, and it is not nutrition advice.

A percent of the basket, then the bin fee

USDA ERS’s EIB-121 estimated that 31% of the 2010 retail and consumer food supply went uneaten, 133 billion pounds, with a retail value of $161.6 billion. At the consumer level the per-person figure was 290 pounds and $371 that year. Their food-loss note repeats the 31% / $162 billion pair.

That $371 is a 2010 national average at retail prices. It is not the number the calculator prints, and it is not a 2026 price.

The food waste cost calculator uses the spending you type:

weekly food spending × waste rate × 52 + monthly disposal cost × 12

The waste percentage applies to purchase value. Composting value and avoided later purchases stay out. Those are the tool’s assumptions.

Fig 1

Basket first, then the bin

The waste share hits the grocery bill. Disposal is a separate line.

Weekly food spendingTimes 52Times the waste shareAnnual waste costMonthly disposalTimes 12

Take a year of groceries. Keep the wasted share. Add twelve disposal fees.

The grocery price increase post already walks a basket that got more expensive. This tool walks the share of that basket you paid for and did not eat.

Example 1: the published $180 week at 12%

Here are the calculator defaults:

  • weekly food spending: $180
  • estimated food wasted: 12%
  • monthly disposal cost: $8

Discarded food: 180 × 0.12 × 52 = $1,123.20

Disposal year: 8 × 12 = $96.00

Annual waste cost: 1123.20 + 96.00 = $1,219.20

Monthly average: 1219.20 ÷ 12 = $101.60

$1,123.20 is groceries you bought. $96.00 is the bin. Together they are $1,219.20, which is 1219.20 ÷ (180 × 52) = 13.0% of a $9,360 grocery year. The extra point is the disposal fee sitting on top of the 12% waste share.

Discarded food is $1,123.20.

The $96.00 disposal year brings the total to $1,219.20.

Example 2: a $90 week for one person

Smaller basket, slightly tighter waste, a cheaper bin.

  • weekly spend: $90
  • waste rate: 10%
  • disposal: $5

Discarded food: 90 × 0.10 × 52 = $468.00

Disposal year: 5 × 12 = $60.00

Annual: $528.00

Monthly average: $44.00

USDA’s 2010 consumer-level $371 sits under this $468 food line. Different year, different prices, and this $90 week is an input you typed, not a survey.

Example 3: a $280 family week at 15%

  • weekly spend: $280
  • waste rate: 15%
  • disposal: $12

Discarded food: 280 × 0.15 × 52 = $2,184.00

Disposal year: 12 × 12 = $144.00

Annual: $2,328.00

Monthly average: $194.00

$2,328.00 is almost double the default. The basket is 280 ÷ 180 = 1.56 times larger, and the waste share is 15 ÷ 12 = 1.25 times heavier. 1.56 × 1.25 = 1.94 on the food line: 2184 ÷ 1123.20 = 1.94.

$90 week$528
$180 week$1.2k
$280 week$2.3k

A $90 week at 10% is $528.00 a year.

The $180 default is $1,219.20. A $280 week at 15% is $2,328.00.

Example 4: what if I cut waste from 12% to 6%

Keep the $180 week and the $8 disposal fee. Halve the waste share.

Discarded food: 180 × 0.06 × 52 = $561.60

Annual: 561.60 + 96.00 = $657.60

Monthly average: $54.80

The default year is $1,219.20. Cutting the waste share in half saves 1219.20 − 657.60 = $561.60. That is exactly the missing food line. Disposal did not move.

A 5% waste share on the same $180 week:

Discarded food: 180 × 0.05 × 52 = $468.00

Annual: 468.00 + 96.00 = $564.00

Monthly average: $47.00

5% versus 12% saves 1219.20 − 564.00 = $655.20 a year.

Example 5: the common mistake, leave disposal at $0

Keep $180 and 12%. Set monthly disposal to $0.

Discarded food: $1,123.20

Annual: $1,123.20

Monthly average: $93.60

The default is $1,219.20. The miss is the $96.00 bin. If the city already folds trash into property tax, $0 can be right. If an $8 line sits on the utility bill, leaving it out hides a month of groceries.

Example 6: a 25% waste share on the same $180

People guess high when last week felt messy.

  • weekly spend: $180
  • waste rate: 25%
  • disposal: $8

Discarded food: 180 × 0.25 × 52 = $2,340.00

Annual: 2340.00 + 96.00 = $2,436.00

Monthly average: $203.00

$2,436.00 is 2436 ÷ 1219.20 = 2.00 times the default, almost. The food line doubled from 12% to 24% would be exact. 25% overshoots that double by 180 × 0.01 × 52 = $93.60.

I would weigh a week of leftovers before I typed 25%. The formula will faithfully multiply whatever percent you give it.

Example 7: the grocery-budget household week

The grocery budget per person calculator defaults are 2 adults at $85 and 2 children at $55, with 15% of meals eaten out.

Weekly home groceries: (2 × 85 + 2 × 55) × 0.85 = 280 × 0.85 = $238.00

Run that $238 week through this waste tool at 12% and $8 disposal.

Discarded food: 238 × 0.12 × 52 = $1,485.12

Annual: 1485.12 + 96.00 = $1,581.12

Monthly average: $131.76

The grocery tool’s yearly home-food total is $12,376.00. $1,485.12 of uneaten food is 1485.12 ÷ 12376 = 12.0% of that year, which is the waste rate you typed. Disposal sits on top.

Example 8: two adults, no kids, $85 each

  • weekly spend: $170
  • waste rate: 12%
  • disposal: $8

Discarded food: 170 × 0.12 × 52 = $1,060.80

Annual: 1060.80 + 96.00 = $1,156.80

Monthly average: $96.40

$170 is close to the $180 default. The year drops by (180 − 170) × 0.12 × 52 = $62.40 on food, so 1219.20 − 62.40 = $1,156.80.

Example 9: the same 12% on a $145 week and a $158 week

The grocery price change calculator defaults move a basket from $145 to $158. Keep waste at 12% and disposal at $8.

On $145:

Discarded food: 145 × 0.12 × 52 = $904.80

Annual: 904.80 + 96.00 = $1,000.80

On $158:

Discarded food: 158 × 0.12 × 52 = $985.92

Annual: 985.92 + 96.00 = $1,081.92

The waste year rose $81.12 because the basket rose $13 and 13 × 0.12 × 52 = $81.12. Disposal did not change. A price increase raises the dollars you throw away even when the waste share stays put.

The unit price post is the other half of this. A cheaper pack still costs you if half of it spoils. The homemade coffee post prices the cup you drink. This tool prices the cup you pour out.
