What is the true cost of an internet plan?

The advertised month is not the year. Here is the promo-plus-regular-plus-fees formula, a $67.50 effective default, and why a 12-month teaser hides a $1,620 two-year bill.

People type this into search every day: internet plan true cost.

The usual answer is the number on the homepage. That number is a promotional month. Setup fees sit next to it. Month 13 is a different price.

This page is a labeled example. It is not a plan offer, and it is not a recommendation to switch providers.

The FCC label already splits the teaser from the regular price

The Federal Communications Commission’s broadband consumer labels page says providers that sell home or mobile broadband must show a label at the point of sale. The label has to disclose prices, introductory rates, data allowances, and speeds.

The FCC glossary for those labels names the pieces this calculator adds up. Monthly price is the plan cost before extra monthly fees and taxes. An introductory rate is a limited-time price. If the month is introductory, the label includes how long that rate lasts, or the date it ends, and what the monthly price will be after it expires. Their example is $50 a month for 24 months, then $60. One-time fees cover connection, installation, or buying a modem. Provider monthly fees cover a modem rental or similar extras.

The internet plan true cost calculator turns those pieces into one effective month:

promo months × promo price + regular months × regular price + setup fees, then divide by the comparison period

Promo months are capped at the comparison period. Prices stay fixed inside each period. Taxes and usage charges are excluded unless you add them to the fees. Those are the tool’s assumptions.

The default path is 12 months at $45, 12 months at $75, and $180 of fees, which is $1,620 over 24 months, or $67.50 a month.

If a modem rental is $10 every month, that $10 is not a one-time fee. Add it to both the promo price and the regular price. The setup box is for the charges you pay once.

The published $67.50 month

Here are the calculator defaults:

  • promotional monthly price: $45
  • promotional months: 12
  • regular monthly price: $75
  • comparison period: 24 months
  • setup and equipment fees: $180

Promo months used: min(12, 24) = 12

Promo window: 12 × 45 = $540.00

Regular window: 12 × 75 = $900.00

Total over 24 months: 540 + 900 + 180 = $1,620.00

Effective monthly cost: 1620 ÷ 24 = $67.50

First-year cost: 12 × 45 + 180 = $720.00

Fees per month: 180 ÷ 24 = $7.50

The homepage said $45. The two-year month is $67.50. That gap is $22.50 a month, or $540.00 over the 24 months.

The first year, including fees, is $720.

The second year adds $900 at the regular price. The two-year total is $1,620.

Month 0 on this path already holds the $180 fee. After six promo months the pile is 180 + 6 × 45 = $450.00. After 12 months it is $720.00. After 18 months, six of them at $75, it is 720 + 6 × 75 = $1,170.00. After 24 months it is $1,620.00.

The comparison window changes the effective month

Hold $45 / 12 months, $75 regular, and $180 setup. Change only how long you stay.

  • 12 months: total $720.00. Effective month $60.00. Fees per month $15.00.
  • 24 months (default): total $1,620.00. Effective month $67.50. Fees per month $7.50.
  • 36 months: total $2,520.00. Effective month $70.00. Fees per month $5.00.

The first year stays $720.00 in all three rows, because the promo still covers those 12 months. Year 2 adds $900. Year 3 adds another $900. The fee is spread thinner as the window grows, so the effective month climbs toward $75 and never quite gets there inside three years.

A 12-month teaser reaches $720 at one year and $1,620 at two.

No teaser reaches $1,980 at two years. A 24-month teaser reaches $1,260.

No promo on a 24-month window is 24 × 75 + 180 = $1,980.00, or $82.50 a month. First-year cost is 12 × 75 + 180 = $1,080.00.

A teaser that lasts the whole 24 months is 24 × 45 + 180 = $1,260.00, or $52.50 a month. First-year cost stays $720.00, because the first 12 months did not change.

A six-month teaser on the same 24-month window is 6 × 45 + 18 × 75 + 180 = 270 + 1,350 + 180 = $1,800.00, or $75.00 a month. First-year cost is 6 × 45 + 6 × 75 + 180 = $900.00.

If you only compare the first year and ignore the $180, the teaser looks like 12 × 45 = $540.00, or $45.00 a month. That is the homepage. It is also the card you get if you set setup to $0 and the comparison period to 12.

Setup fees look small until you leave early

Hold the default prices and 24 months. Change only setup.

  • Setup $0: total $1,440.00. Effective month $60.00. First year $540.00.
  • Setup $180 (default): total $1,620.00. Effective month $67.50. First year $720.00.
  • Setup $300: total $1,740.00. Effective month $72.50. First year $840.00. Fees per month $12.50.

The $180 default is $7.50 of every effective month on a two-year stay. Leave at month 12 and that same $180 is $15.00 a month. Stay 36 months and it is $5.00 a month. The fee did not change. The divisor did.

A lower teaser with a higher landing price can still win the two-year math. $35 for 12 months, then $80, plus the same $180, over 24 months:

Promo window: 12 × 35 = $420.00

Regular window: 12 × 80 = $960.00

Total: 420 + 960 + 180 = $1,560.00

Effective month: $65.00

First year: 420 + 180 = $600.00

That plan beats the $67.50 default by $2.50 a month, even though month 13 is $5 higher. The cheaper first year is what did it.

A modem rental belongs in both monthly boxes

The FCC glossary lists modem rental under provider monthly fees, not under one-time fees. Labeled example: add $10 to both prices on the defaults.

Promo $55, regular $85, 12 promo months, 24-month window, $180 setup.

Total: 12 × 55 + 12 × 85 + 180 = 660 + 1,020 + 180 = $1,860.00

Effective month: $77.50

First year: 12 × 55 + 180 = $840.00

The rental added $10 × 24 = $240.00 to the two-year bill, which is the $10 gap between $67.50 and $77.50. Put a one-time modem purchase in the setup box instead, and it spreads the same way the $180 does.

Taxes are the other missing line. The tool says they are excluded unless you add them. If your label lists tax inside an all-inclusive month, type that all-inclusive month. If tax sits on top, raise both prices by the same amount, or accept that $67.50 is before tax.

Treat the effective month like any other subscription

The subscription annual cost calculator multiplies a monthly stack by 12. Put the $67.50 effective month in the first slot and zero the rest.

Year: $810.00

Week: $15.58

Three years: $2,430.00

That three-year figure is 36 × 67.50. It is not the 36-month internet card. The 36-month internet card was $2,520.00, because two extra years at $75 plus a thinner fee slice are not the same as 36 copies of the 24-month average.

The subscription post is this same habit on apps. The unit price post is the other way to stop comparing the teaser on the shelf. An internet plan is a two-year unit price. The unit is a month.

Buying the modem once, versus renting it, is the subscription vs one-time purchase question. A $10 rental against a $180 modem, no other upkeep, over two years:

Subscribe: 10 × 24 = $240.00

Own: $180.00

Break-even: 180 ÷ 10 = 18 months

Own costs less over those two years. If you move at month 12 and leave the modem behind, run the window again.

The appliance electricity post is a different bill in the same house. Do not hide the internet line inside that kWh card.

Open the internet plan true cost calculator with the promotional month, the regular month, and the one-time fees on the FCC label. Set the comparison period to the months you will keep the plan. If the leftover is a stack of apps, add it in the subscription annual cost calculator.
