People type this into search every day: hotel total cost calculator.
The usual answer is the nightly rate on the first card. Tax sits under a drop-down. A resort fee appears at checkout. A resort parking charge arrives at the desk.
I am not going to invent a city occupancy-tax table. The hotel total cost calculator adds the room, the tax on that room, the nightly fee, and the one-time fees you type.
This page is a labeled example. It is not a hotel quote, and it is not advice about where to stay.
Room, tax, nightly fee, one-time fee
The calculator uses:
nights × nightly rate × (1 + tax) + nights × fee per night + one-time fees
Tax applies to the room rate only. Parking, meals, and deposits are excluded unless you put them in a fee box. Those are the tool’s assumptions.
Fig 1
Four pieces, one stay
Tax rides on the room. The resort fee rides on the night. One-time fees sit at the end.
Multiply nights by the rate. Add lodging tax. Add the nightly fee. Add the one-time charge.
The FTC Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees says short-term lodging has to advertise a total price that includes mandatory resort, service, and destination fees. Government charges, including occupancy tax, may sit outside that advertised total. They still belong in the cash you bring.
Their own FAQ example is a $199 nightly rate plus a mandatory $39 resort fee. I run that pair later. GSA’s FY 2026 standard lodging is $110 a night, taxes excluded. That $110 is a reimbursement ceiling, not a hotel offer.
Example 1: the published $1,211 stay
Here are the calculator defaults:
- nights: 5
- nightly room rate: $180
- lodging tax: 14%
- fee per night: $28
- one-time fees: $45
Room: 5 × 180 = $900.00
Tax: 900 × 0.14 = $126.00
Resort fees: 5 × 28 = $140.00
One-time: $45.00
Stay total: 900 + 126 + 140 + 45 = $1,211.00
Effective nightly cost: 1211 ÷ 5 = $242.20
Taxes and fees: 1211 − 900 = $311.00

Example 2: two weekend nights
Keep $180, 14%, $28, and $45. Set nights to 2.
Room: 2 × 180 = $360.00
Tax: $50.40
Resort: $56.00
One-time: $45.00
Total: $511.40
Effective night: $255.70
Taxes and fees: $151.40
The $45 fee is now $22.50 of every night. On the five-night stay it was $9.00 a night. Short stays make one-time charges look large.
Example 3: a seven-night week
Same rates. Nights 7.
Room: 7 × 180 = $1,260.00
Tax: $176.40
Resort: $196.00
One-time: $45.00
Total: $1,677.40
Effective night: $239.63
Taxes and fees: $417.40

| 3 | $745 |
| 4 | $978 |
| 5 | $1.2k |
| 6 | $1.4k |
| 7 | $1.7k |
One night is $278.20. Two nights are $511.40.
Five nights are $1,211. Seven nights are $1,677.40.
Each extra night adds 180 × 1.14 + 28 = $233.20. The $45 does not come back. That is why the effective night falls from $278.20 on night one to $239.63 on night seven.
One night alone: room $180, tax $25.20, resort $28, one-time $45 = $278.20.
Three nights: $744.60, effective $248.20.
Four nights: $977.80, effective $244.45.
Six nights: $1,444.20, effective $240.70.
Example 4: what if I drop the resort fee
Hold the five-night default. Resort fee $0.
Room: $900.00
Tax: $126.00
Resort: $0.00
One-time: $45.00
Total: $1,071.00
Effective night: $214.20
Taxes and fees: $171.00
$1,211 − $1,071 = $140, which is five $28 fees. The FTC rule treats that $28 as part of the advertised total when the fee is mandatory. The calculator still lets you type $0 so you can see the gap.
One-time $0, resort back at $28: total $1,166.00. Effective night $233.20. Taxes and fees $266.00.
Example 5: 8% tax vs 18% tax
Hold $180, $28, $45, five nights.
8% tax: room $900, tax $72.00, total $1,157.00. Effective night $231.40. Fees $257.00.
14% (default): total $1,211.00. Effective $242.20.
18% tax: tax $162.00, total $1,247.00. Effective $249.40. Fees $347.00.
Tax $0: total $1,085.00. Effective $217.00. Fees $185.00. That $185 is only the $140 resort pile and the $45 desk charge.

The tax field is a percent you type. It is not a city table. Look up the occupancy rate on the bill or the city’s finance page, then enter that number.
Example 6: the common mistake, quoting $180 × 5
Five nights at the headline rate is 5 × 180 = $900.
The stay is $1,211. The miss is $311, or 34.6% of $900.
People do this on a weekend too. 2 × 180 = $360, against a $511.40 bill. The miss is $151.40.

Example 7: a cheaper room that keeps the same fees
Nightly rate $140, everything else default.
Room: 5 × 140 = $700.00
Tax: $98.00
Resort: $140.00
One-time: $45.00
Total: $983.00
Effective night: $196.60
Taxes and fees: $283.00
You saved $40 × 1.14 = $45.60 of room-plus-tax per night, or $228 over five nights. $1,211 − $983 = $228. The $28 fee and the $45 did not move. Fees are now 28.8% of the stay (283 ÷ 983).
Nightly rate $250:
Room: $1,250.00
Tax: $175.00
Resort: $140.00
One-time: $45.00
Total: $1,610.00
Effective night: $322.00

The $180 default is $1,211. A $250 room is $1,610.
Example 8: the FTC $199 + $39 pair
FAQ example: $199 a night plus a $39 mandatory resort fee. Keep the default 14% tax and $45 one-time, five nights.
Room: 5 × 199 = $995.00
Tax: 995 × 0.14 = $139.30
Resort: 5 × 39 = $195.00
One-time: $45.00
Total: $1,374.30
Effective night: $274.86
Taxes and fees: $379.30
The advertised total under the rule, before government charges, is 199 + 39 = $238 a night, or $1,190 for five nights, plus the $45 if that charge is also mandatory. Tax still sits on top of the $995 room in this model, because the tool taxes the room rate only.

Example 9: GSA $110 for three nights, tax only
$110, 14% tax, no resort fee, no one-time fee, three nights.
Room: 3 × 110 = $330.00
Tax: $46.20
Total: $376.20
Effective night: $125.40
Seven nights at the same $110 and 14%, still no extra fees: $877.80, effective $125.40. Every night adds 110 × 1.14 = $125.40. That is the GSA $110 plus tax, which GSA’s own bulletin leaves out of the $110.
Put $1,211 into the lodging line of the trip budget calculator default and the trip becomes $3,237.92. The trip budget post walks that pile. The $1,200 lodging default was $11 short of this hotel card.
Once the room is paid, leftover cash belongs in the daily travel budget calculator. The hotel tool does not spread $1,211 across meals.
A move-in is a different pile: truck, deposit, first month. A rent increase is a lease. This tool is nights.

Open the hotel total cost calculator with the nightly rate, the tax on the folio, the resort fee, and the one-time charge from the checkout page. If you only have the $180 card, the stay is not $900. It is $1,211 on these defaults, and the effective night is $242.20.
